After returning from a tour of duty in Iraq with the United States Army, I wasted little time putting that experience to use. I concluded degrees in US History, Political Science, and European Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and completed an internship as a researcher in the Parliament of the United Kingdom. Little did I know that a post-graduate internship as a Financial Planner at The Capital Group would spark an enduring fascination with finance.

Today, I work primarily with employer-sponsored retirement plans and group benefits. Much of my training has been hands on, working with The Capital Group’s existing cadre of businesses and non- profits. Because plan design and administration can be so complex, I have felt inspired to pursue industry training courses to deepen my knowledge base and absorb best demonstrated practices. A quiet perk of working with so many business owners on their 401(k) plans has been getting to sit in on meetings regarding their own financial planning and wealth management. Learning about high end estate planning, investment management programs, and tax reduction strategies has made me very prepared for the times when I conduct on-site financial planning reviews with employees.

Although I’ve enjoyed modest success in my career thus far, I do not believe that a job defines a person. I believe our actions in life and in our communities speak louder than words, and that those who have been blessed with much should help those who have little. With that in mind, I take an active role in Madison. I volunteer for, and serve on an advisory board to, the Wisconsin Veterans’ Museum, an organization I care about deeply. I am a member of Team Rubicon, a veterans’ service organization dedicated to providing emergency response in the wake of natural and man-made disasters. I build houses with Habitat for Humanity. I also teach scuba diving and co-coordinate several annual lake- cleaning dives in the Madison area. In the past three years, we’ve removed over two tons of trash.

I also believe that continuing education is more than just important, it‘s a necessity. For this reason I am preparing to re-enter the academic world and pursue an MBA (part-time).
